Republic Services is Richmond's exclusive franchised hauler and collects trash, recycling, and organics weekly on a route-specific day Monday through Friday. Carts must be at the curb by 6 AM on collection day and removed by the end of the day or the morning after.
Richmond contracts exclusively with Republic Services (formerly Richmond Sanitary Service) for residential and commercial solid waste, recycling, and organics collection under a franchise agreement administered through the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority (RecycleMore). Collection occurs once per week on a fixed day determined by address. Residents can look up their day at republicservices.com or by calling 510-262-7100. Carts must be placed at the curb with wheels toward the house, handles facing the street, at least three feet of clearance on all sides (away from parked cars, mailboxes, and other carts), by 6:00 AM on the service day. Richmond Municipal Code Chapter 9.28 (Solid Waste) requires carts to be removed from the public right-of-way within 24 hours of pickup; leaving carts curbside longer is a municipal infraction with fines escalating from a courtesy notice to $100+ per occurrence. Missed pickups should be reported to Republic Services within 24 hours for a free return trip. Holiday schedule: collection slides one day later for the week following New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Extra bags outside the cart are only collected with pre-purchased overage stickers. During red flag fire weather or high winds (common in Richmond's hills), residents are encouraged to secure cart lids to prevent debris scatter into San Francisco Bay.
