Bethel, CT Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 80-7A(2) of the Recycling ordinance governs container placement after residents prepare newspaper, cardboard, and glass and metal food or beverage containers for collection under §§ 80-7A(1) and 80-8. The container goes within 10 feet of the street or curbline, or another spot the resident and collector agree on, and cannot be set out earlier than 12 hours before the scheduled collection time. It must be pulled back from the street, curbline or other collection point within 12 hours after the collector picks up the materials.

The section separately requires that however the container is placed, it cannot create a travel or health hazard or a nuisance of any sort. Newspaper and cardboard must be tightly packed or flattened and tied in bundles not exceeding 50 pounds under § 80-7A(1). Section 80-9 adds that once recyclables are set at the curb they belong to the town's authorized collector, and anyone else who picks them up, sometimes called scavenging, violates the chapter and may owe restitution for the value of what was taken, on top of any fine.
