Trash and recycling carts in unincorporated Salt Lake County must be the standard 95, 60, or 35 gallon carts provided by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District. Residents may not use personal cans for automated collection. Carts must be placed at the curb by 7 AM, removed within 24 hours of pickup, and stored out of direct street view on non-collection days.
Automated collection in unincorporated Salt Lake County requires the use of standardized carts issued by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District because collection trucks use robotic arms that grip and lift specific cart profiles. Residents may not substitute personal cans, bags, or homemade containers for regular service. The District offers black refuse carts in 95 gallon, 60 gallon, and 35 gallon sizes, with rates adjusted for smaller carts to encourage waste reduction. Blue recycling carts are offered in 95 gallon and 35 gallon sizes at no additional charge beyond standard fees. Optional green waste carts are available seasonally by subscription. When placing carts at the curb, residents must leave at least 3 feet of horizontal clearance between carts and between carts and parked cars, mailboxes, utility poles, or other obstacles, plus overhead clearance free of low-hanging branches and wires. Carts must face the street with the handle toward the house and the lid fully closed. Overfilled carts or carts with trash bags on top may be skipped, as automated trucks cannot handle loose material. Extra bags beyond cart capacity are not collected under standard service and must be removed to a transfer station or scheduled bulky pickup. On non-collection days, carts must be stored alongside or behind the dwelling, out of direct view from the public street, per County property maintenance standards. Damaged or stolen carts are replaced by the District at no charge for normal wear.
