Containers issued by the city must be used for curbside collection and stored out of public view between pickups, typically behind a fence or in a garage. Lids must close fully and carts remain in serviceable condition; damaged carts are replaced by the hauler.
South Jordan Municipal Code Title 8 requires that all residential solid waste be placed in city-issued automated carts for curbside collection. Loose bags, open boxes, and non-issued containers are generally not collected. Cart lids must be fully closed to prevent odor, scavenging, and wind-scattering; overfilled carts (lid propped open) may be refused. Between collection days, carts must be stored out of public view from the street, which for most lots means behind the front-yard setback, in the side yard behind a gate, or inside the garage. Placement at the curb is limited to the 24-hour window around the scheduled pickup (12 hours before through end of pickup day). Carts are the property of the hauler; residents must not paint, drill, or permanently mark them. Damaged carts (broken wheels, lids, or cracked bodies) should be reported to the city or hauler for free replacement. Replacement of lost or stolen carts may involve a fee. Extra trash that does not fit in the cart requires purchase of a supplemental cart or use of a bulk-pickup voucher. Commercial properties use dumpsters contracted separately and subject to screening and setback requirements.
