Wichita, KS Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Sec. 030(a) splits storage duties by property type. Single-family occupants must provide enough containers, thirty-to-thirty-five-gallon plastic or metal cans approved by the health officer, or larger seventy-to-one-hundred-eight-gallon wheeled carts with an attached lid if the solid waste collector permits one, to hold a full week's trash between pickups; plastic bags are allowed only for yard waste. Every container must be watertight, rodentproof and flyproof, with the lid or closure kept in place, and must be stored on the premises where the trash was produced, positioned for the collector's convenient access.

The placement rule is specific: containers stay behind the front yard setback line and may only come out to the curb on the day of collection. Multifamily-dwelling owners must supply the same type of containers, or a containerized unit sized to hold the building's weekly trash, and are personally responsible for the containers' condition and for keeping trash inside them. Apartment complexes and mobile home parks get a numeric cap: no more than ten thirty-to-thirty-five-gallon containers may sit at any one location, or the owner can use containerized units instead; mobile home parks may alternatively give each individual home its own can or wheeled cart, but must then arrange weekly collection for each home separately.

Sec. 030(b) requires collection at least once a week, using a city-licensed packer truck that disposes of the trash at a licensed sanitary landfill or processing facility.
