Berkeley residents receive complimentary bulky-waste pickups each year by appointment through the Zero Waste Division for furniture, mattresses, and large items that do not fit in a cart.
The Berkeley Zero Waste Division offers scheduled bulky-item collection for single-family and small multi-family accounts as part of the standard refuse service. Residents call (510) 981-7270 or submit a request online to book a pickup for couches, mattresses, appliances, and similar oversized items. Mattresses and box springs are recycled through the state Bye Bye Mattress program (free drop-off also available). Electronic waste, refrigerants, paint, batteries, and other household hazardous waste are not accepted at the curb and must go to the Alameda County HHW facility. Illegal dumping of bulky items on the street or on vacant lots violates BMC 11.28 and is aggressively enforced with fines. Residents can also self-haul to the Berkeley Transfer Station at 1201 Second Street for a fee.
