Livermore, CA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Livermore Municipal Code Section 8.08.040(K) covers what happens when a household or business generates more solid waste, recyclable materials or compostable materials than its issued cart, bin or debris box can hold. The owner or occupant must pay an extra fee to the franchisee to have the overage collected, with that fee set under Article 8 of the City's franchise agreement and approved by the City Council. The excess material itself cannot simply be piled beside the cart: the code requires it to be carefully placed beside the container in securely tied bags or bundles that do not exceed six feet in length and 30 pounds in weight.

The same chapter gives residents a separate path for genuinely large cleanup needs through Article XI's Neighborhood Preservation Clean-Up Services program (Sections 8.08.1000 through 8.08.1020), created in 2002 after the city's neighborhood preservation division logged 2,729 solid-waste complaints in a three-year span. That program funds dumpsters and cleanup assistance through a share of the solid waste collection fee, citation revenue, building permit fees and the general fund, rather than through a per-bundle charge like Section 8.08.040(K).
