Chicopee, MA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 169-13(E) of the Chicopee Code addresses bulky waste directly. Discarded furniture, mattresses, large electronics, tires, carpeting and large appliances can be picked up curbside through the City's residential Curbside Bulk Pickup Program. Construction and demolition debris, commercial bulk waste and hazardous waste will not be picked up curbside, and the property owner is responsible for their disposal. A property owner can also dispose of bulk items privately at local transfer stations and recycling venues.

The same section limits what can go to the curb at all. Under § 169-13(G)(2), no person shall place at curbside any material listed as restricted in the state regulations on waste control (310 CMR 19.017) or inconsistent with the City's disposal policy and contract provisions. The banned list includes, but is not limited to, batteries, tires, white goods such as stoves, refrigerators and hot-water heaters, televisions and computers, video games, fluorescent lamps, electronic ballasts and medical waste. Tires and appliances appear on both the bulk list and the banned list, and the code does not explain how the two fit together. This section also prints no fee, schedule or item limit for the bulk program.

Related rules close off other routes. Building, remodeling, demolition and other construction debris is outside City sanitation service under § 169-4(E). A temporary dumpster on a residential property is allowed for a total of eight weeks, only for household demolition or construction debris, with prior Health Department approval, and a dumpster on City property needs a Department of Public Works permit (§ 169-5(D)(3)). Once bulk items are set out, § 169-11 makes refuse on public property for collection City property, and only City personnel or a licensed collector can remove contained refuse. A person gathering refuse that is not contained in a barrel, bag or other container must file name, address, contact telephone number, vehicle description and registration number with the Superintendent of Public Works.
