Federal Way residents can schedule bulky item pickup with Waste Management for an extra fee or self-haul to the King County Algona Transfer Station. Mattresses, appliances, and furniture are accepted with limits.
Federal Way does not include bulky item pickup in the standard solid waste subscription under FWRC 11.20, so residents have two main options. First, Waste Management offers on-call bulky item pickup for an additional fee, typically 30 to 75 dollars per item depending on size and type. Schedule a pickup by calling WM at 800-592-9995 or through the WM customer portal, and items must be placed at the curb the night before the scheduled pickup. Acceptable bulky items include couches, mattresses, dressers, tables, and appliances with refrigerant removed (Freon certificate required for refrigerators and AC units). Second, residents can self-haul bulky waste to the King County Algona Transfer Station at 35315 West Valley Highway South, Algona, which charges a minimum fee of around 38 dollars for up to 330 pounds. Electronics (TVs, computers, monitors) are accepted free through the state E-Cycle Washington program at participating retailers. Mattresses can be recycled free at the Algona station under the King County mattress recycling program. Illegal dumping of bulky items in alleys, vacant lots, or roadsides is a serious violation under FWRC Title 1 with fines up to 1,000 dollars and possible misdemeanor charges under state law RCW 70A.200.
Illegal dumping of mattresses, appliances, or furniture can result in civil penalties up to 1,000 dollars, the cost of cleanup, and misdemeanor charges under FWRC Title 1 and RCW 70A.200.
