Federal Way's solid waste, recycling, and yard waste collection is provided by Waste Management (WM) under an exclusive city contract per FWRC 11.20. Weekly service is mandatory for most residences.
Federal Way contracts with Waste Management (WM) as the exclusive residential and commercial solid waste hauler under Federal Way Revised Code Chapter 11.20 (Solid Waste Collection Regulations) and Chapter 11.15 (Solid Waste in General). Every single-family residence and most multifamily properties must subscribe to weekly garbage service, with curbside recycling and yard and food waste collection bundled at no extra charge for single-family customers. Collection day is assigned by neighborhood and runs Monday through Friday, with pickup generally between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Carts must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day and returned to the property by the end of the day under FWRC 11.20. Cart sizes are typically 10, 20, 35, 64, or 96 gallons, with rates tied to cart size to encourage waste reduction (pay-as-you-throw). Holiday pickup schedules shift service by one day for the week following New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Missed pickups can be reported to WM within 24 hours for a return trip. Illegal dumping, unauthorized hauling, and overflowing carts are code violations. Call WM at 800-592-9995 or Federal Way Solid Waste and Recycling at 253-835-2770 with questions.
Failure to subscribe to required garbage service or unauthorized hauling can result in civil infractions under FWRC 11.20 with fines starting at 100 dollars. Illegal dumping penalties can reach 1,000 dollars and criminal charges for repeat offenders.
