Auburn requires mandatory solid waste service for all residential and commercial customers under ACC Chapter 8.08. Waste Management is the city contractor and provides weekly garbage and biweekly recycling pickup.
Auburn City Code Chapter 8.08 (Solid Waste) establishes a uniform system for the collection and disposal of garbage, recyclables, and compostables citywide and makes service mandatory for single-family residences, multifamily properties, and commercial customers. The city contracts with Waste Management of Washington (WM) as the exclusive solid waste service provider for curbside collection in Auburn. Residential customers receive weekly garbage collection, biweekly (every other week) curbside recycling in a commingled cart, and weekly yard and food waste collection from April through October with biweekly service November through March in most areas. Pickup day is assigned by route and typically falls on the same weekday each week; holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day shift collection one day later for the rest of that week. Containers must be placed at the curb by the service provider's scheduled start time on collection day and must be removed from public view within a reasonable time after collection under ACC 8.08.100. Customers choose a cart size (typically 20, 35, 64, or 96 gallons) and extra bags of garbage cost 10.83 dollars each above the monthly service level under the city-approved rate schedule. Service questions go to WM customer service at 800-592-9995; billing is handled through the Auburn utility bill.
Setting containers out late or leaving them at the curb too long after pickup can trigger code enforcement notices under ACC 8.08.100. Failure to subscribe to mandatory service can result in utility-bill enforcement and civil penalties under ACC 8.08.
