Kent's solid waste and recycling collection is provided by Republic Services under a city contract. Weekly garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup is mandatory for residences under KCC 7.03.
Kent contracts with Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste) as the exclusive residential and commercial solid waste hauler under Kent City Code Chapter 7.03 (Solid Waste). Every single-family residence and most multifamily units are required to subscribe to weekly garbage service, with recycling and yard/food waste collection included at no additional charge for single-family customers. Collection day is assigned by neighborhood and runs Monday through Friday, with pickup typically between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Carts must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day and returned to the property by the end of the day per KCC 7.03.070. Kent customers choose from 20, 32, 64, or 96-gallon garbage carts, with rates set by the city and tied to cart size to encourage waste reduction. Holiday pickup schedules shift service by one day for the week following New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Missed pickup reports can be made to Republic Services within 24 hours for a return trip. Illegal dumping and overflowing carts are code violations. Call Republic Services at 206-777-6440 or Kent Public Works at 253-856-5500 for service questions.
Failure to subscribe to required garbage service or placing carts out improperly can result in civil infractions under KCC 7.03 with fines starting at 100 dollars. Illegal dumping penalties can reach 1,000 dollars and criminal charges for repeat offenders.
