Renton, WA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

RMC 8-1-2 defines "bulky waste" as large items of solid waste, "including but not limited to items such as furniture; large household appliances, including but not limited to refrigerators, freezers, ovens, ranges, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters, washing machines, or clothes dryers; junk vehicles, vehicle hulks or any parts thereof... and any other oversized solid wastes which would typically not fit into or be permitted for collection as garbage in garbage cans." Bulky waste is excluded from the definition of ordinary "garbage" and instead follows its own storage and collection rules.

RMC 8-1-4(E), "Unlawful Storage of Bulky Waste," bars storing, keeping, or accumulating bulky waste on private property except for a licensed ancillary disposal provider or licensed business operating in a zoned collection or disposal area. RMC 8-1-4(F), "Unlawful Deposit of Bulky Waste," separately bars dumping bulky waste in any street, alley, or public way, or on another person's private property without consent, except when picked up by the City's collection contractor, another City-authorized hauler, or a licensed ancillary disposal provider under a City permit.

Renton residents dispose of bulky items through On-Call Bulky Waste Collection listed in the RMC 8-1-10 rate schedule, priced per pickup: white goods other than refrigerators or freezers cost $98.66 in 2025, rising to $104.58 in 2026; refrigerators and freezers cost $105.58, rising to $111.91; and sofas or chairs cost $91.75, rising to $97.26 per unit. Violating the storage or deposit bans is a misdemeanor under RMC 8-1-4(O), enforced under RMC 1-3-1.
