Renton, WA Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

RMC 8-1-8(C) provides that when a legal holiday falls during the workweek and the contractor does not work that holiday, Saturday collections will be permitted, letting the contractor make up the missed weekday route rather than skip it. The code does not define 'legal holiday' inside Chapter 8-1, so it draws on the citywide list set at RMC 1-8-1: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Veterans' Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and Christmas Day (December 25).

Under RMC 1-8-1(D), if any of those holidays falls on a Sunday it is observed the following Monday, and if it falls on a Saturday it is observed the preceding Friday, which is the mechanism that determines exactly which weekday the contractor is off and therefore which week's collection moves to Saturday. Because Renton's residential routes only run once weekly, a mid-week holiday shift means the whole week's garbage, recycling and yard waste for that route may not go out until the Saturday following the scheduled day, rather than being skipped or doubled up the following week. The Solid Waste Utility administers the contract and schedule adjustments under the supervision authority set out in RMC 8-1-5.
