Ridgefield, CT Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Ridgefield runs its solid waste system as a self-haul transfer station, not a curbside collection contract, so bulky items follow a different path than bagged household garbage. Town Code § 305-4 defines bulky rubbish as nonputrescible waste from dwellings or commercial, industrial, institutional or agricultural establishments that is too large or too heavy for a solid waste collector's equipment to load safely. Because ordinary containers cannot hold it, § 305-7(A)(1) excuses residents from the town's requirement to keep bulky rubbish and demolition or construction waste in a solid waste container between collections.

The same chapter's special wastes definition folds in green or dead brush, scrap metal, white goods, tires and items such as furniture, mattresses and rugs. Under § 305-10(B), the Board of Selectmen decides how these special wastes are handled at the Town solid waste facility, and disposal has to meet local, state and federal rules on top of whatever the Board sets. Getting onto the facility grounds at all requires a vehicle permit: a Class A permit for a resident hauling their own load in a passenger vehicle, obtained from the office of the First Selectman on proof of Ridgefield residency, or a Class B permit for a pickup, van or trailer under § 305-12.

The Director of Public Services inspects solid waste management under § 305-14 and can order corrective measures; an aggrieved permit holder has 15 days to appeal a notice, suspension or revocation to the Board of Selectmen under § 305-15(A).
