Springfield, IL Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Springfield City Code Sec. 16 puts the office of public works, working with the office of public utilities, in charge of telling residents through utility bills how large items not eligible for regular garbage pickup get collected. A resident who has an appliance, furniture piece, or other oversized item must contact their own waste hauler to coordinate the pickup rather than expecting the item to go out with normal weekly service. Each licensed refuse hauler is separately required to report to the office of public works any large items the hauler notices during its normal routes that qualify for the large item pickup program, as well as other abandoned garbage, rubbish, or solid waste that has not been properly disposed of.

This reporting duty exists on top of the hauler's general licensing obligations under Chapter 110 and its route and service reporting under Sec. 03(c), which requires monthly listings of addresses serviced and any discontinuance of service. Because bulk items fall outside a hauler's regular weekly service, they are billed as an additional service: under Sec. 25 every five years starting January 1, 2022.
