Athens Services provides Whittier single-family and multifamily residents up to four (4) bulky item collections per year, with up to three (3) items per collection, at no extra cost. Collections occur on your pickup day and must be reserved at least two business days in advance.
Bulky item disposal in the City of Whittier is handled by the exclusive franchised hauler, Athens Services. Per the Athens City of Whittier FAQ, beginning November 1, 2025, single-family and multifamily residents are provided up to four (4) bulky item collections per year, with up to three (3) items per collection, at no additional cost. Each item must not be larger than what two people can safely handle. Additional collections beyond the included four are subject to charges. Collections occur on a customer's scheduled pickup day and must be reserved at least two (2) business days in advance; residents schedule online at AthensServices.com/Bulky or by calling Athens Customer Care at (888) 336-6100. Athens collects items such as appliances and furniture. The city's franchise with Athens also funds community beautification programs, including two neighborhood cleanup events with paper shredding and electronic-waste (E-Waste) drop-off, plus compost and mulch giveaways and increased bulky-item collections. Illegal dumping of bulky items on streets, parkways or vacant lots is separately prohibited as a public nuisance under the city's property-maintenance code (Chapter 8.08). This bulky-item program applies to the incorporated city; unincorporated South/West/East Whittier residents use their LA County franchise hauler instead.
Dumping bulky items illegally (rather than scheduling free pickups) is a public nuisance under Municipal Code Ch. 8.08 and can lead to abatement and cost recovery. Exceeding four free collections per year incurs Athens charges.
