Monterey Park, CA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Monterey Park Municipal Code Section 6.08.080 makes residential refuse and recyclables service mandatory rather than optional. Every occupied single-family dwelling, and every multi-unit residential building not already on bin service, must maintain collection service equivalent to similar dwellings in the city. Multi-unit buildings not receiving curbside pickup must instead carry a minimum bin size of one and one-half cubic yards serviced at least once a week, the same minimum the code imposes on commercial and industrial customers under Section 6.08.150. The fees charged for making this service available are not fixed in the code; Section 6.08.080(a) sets them by a separate city council resolution the city updates from time to time.

Section 6.08.060 fills in how the mandatory service is delivered. Residents may only use the containers the servicer, the collector holding the city's franchise license under Section 6.08.050, actually provides; no substitute containers are allowed. Curbside customers put refuse and recyclables, other than yard waste, in the black container and yard waste in the green container, and no container may go out for pickup once its contents exceed three hundred pounds. Bin-service customers place refuse and recyclables directly in the bin the servicer supplies, and no occupant may move a bin or debris box once the servicer has placed it. If a household's containers cannot hold everything generated between pickups, Section 6.08.060(b) requires the customer to subscribe to additional service rather than overfilling containers or bagging extra waste at the curb.
