Monterey Park, CA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Monterey Park Municipal Code Section 6.08.070 lets any residential service recipient set out bulky items, discarded large and small household appliances, furniture, carpets, mattresses, clothing, tires and oversized wood waste that does not qualify as yard waste, for pickup at the next normal weekly collection, but only after giving the servicer twenty-four hours' notice. Refrigerators get faster service: the servicer must collect a refrigerator within twenty-four hours of the notice rather than waiting for the regular route. Where no curb exists, items go as close to the edge of the street as practicable.

Placement is also timed under Section 6.08.060(d): no container or bulky item may go out on a parkway earlier than twenty-four hours before the collection date set by the director of public works, and anything not picked up must be cleared from the public right-of-way by midnight of the scheduled collection day so it does not block the street. Curbside containers themselves are capped at three hundred pounds under Section 6.08.060(c), though that cap governs refuse and recyclable containers rather than bulky items set out separately.

A bulky item, or any refuse container, left in the right-of-way outside these windows is treated the same as unlawfully deposited refuse under Section 6.08.030: the director of community development can order it removed within three days, after which the director of public works may abate it with city crews or a contractor and add the cost to the property's water and solid waste bill under Section 6.08.040.
