Beloit, WI Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

City of Beloit Code of Ordinances § 7.236 restricts dumpster use to multifamily and nonresidential properties. Single-family and duplex residential properties can't place a trash dumpster or similar outdoor waste or recycling container on site at all; those households use the City-supplied collection carts described in Chapter 17 instead.

Where a dumpster is allowed, § 7.236(2) requires it to be screened from public view on 3 sides by a solid fence or wall at least 6 feet in height and on the fourth side a solid gate at least 5 feet in height. The gate must stay closed except when trash is actually being collected, and both the fence and gate need to be kept in good working order rather than left damaged or standing open. The ordinance also requires the enclosure to be architecturally compatible with other buildings and structures on site, so a screening wall can't be a mismatched material or style from the rest of the property.

This screening duty sits alongside the separate rubbish-accumulation rules in § 7.234, which require acceptable storage containers, metal, wood, fiberglass, molded plastic or rubber, with tight covers, for any solid waste stored outside a fully enclosed building or dedicated waste enclosure, and bars using plastic bags, paper bags or cardboard boxes as long-term storage containers.
