Bonita Springs, FL Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Subsection (b) of § 10-101 covers the fixed container, which is the situation of a commercial dumpster or any other refuse container that cannot be rolled to the curb under the 24-hour timing rule in subsection (a). The section uses the term refuse containers and does not name dumpsters or roll-offs.

The screening must be opaque and must hide the container from view from streets and from adjoining properties. The code lists the ways to do it. Landscaping can screen the container, or the container's location on the site can do it. Walls or opaque fencing also count, provided the wall or fence does not exceed the maximum height permitted for that location, with a cross-reference to section 4-923 et seq. of the Land Development Code. If the nonmovable container would still be visible above the allowable height, the owner must replace it with a shorter container.

Chapter 32 adds rules for the recycling side of the site. Under § 32-58, a business that recycles must keep exterior recyclable materials storage areas in accordance with city requirements for solid waste enclosures, keep containers located outdoors covered and secured to prevent material blowing, leaking or falling out, and keep all storage areas, including the containers, in a clean, sanitary and litter-free manner. Section 32-59 sets the same duties for multifamily properties, which the code defines as five dwelling units or more on a single parcel.

Two related limits protect the site itself. Section 10-96(b)(8) declares scattered trash and litter that remains on site longer than 24 hours a nuisance on residential property, and § 10-94(d)(5) bars use of a temporary storage unit or shipping container to store solid waste, construction debris or demolition debris. Section 10-103 names the county sheriff's office and city code enforcement manager as enforcers.
