Bonita Springs, FL Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Division 2 of chapter 32 is the city's mandatory recycling division. Section 32-57 defines a multifamily property as any multifamily dwelling, building or group of buildings that contains five dwelling units or more on a single parcel, including apartments, condominiums, mobile home parks and recreational vehicle parks. Under § 32-56(b), multifamily properties must use the designated franchise hauler for collection of the required recycling materials.

Section 32-59(a)(1) requires an on-site program and a collection system for mixed paper, office paper, newspaper, paperboard, corrugated cardboard, glass containers, #1 through #7 plastic containers, metal and aluminum cans, white goods and electronic devices. A program must be in place within 14 days of initial occupancy, and an entity with multiple properties keeps a program for each one. Subsection (a)(3) covers pickup: locations are mutually agreed upon by the multifamily property owner and the service provider, and the collection schedule is a minimum of weekly.

The container rules follow. Containers must be clearly labeled, including the word recycling or the chasing arrows symbol and language such as no trash, and containers outside the property must be covered and secured against blowing, leaking or falling out and against vector populations. The owner keeps storage areas clean, sanitary and litter-free.

An owner can seek a temporary exemption from the director. It is granted only for hardship and runs for a period not to exceed one year. The criteria are incompatibility with other city ordinances or laws, or unavailability of on-site space for storing a required material. Solid waste division staff can inspect the program and request the service agreement, and the property must supply requested non-financial information within 20 business days of a written request.

Businesses have a separate schedule under § 32-58: a written service agreement must provide at a minimum one collection every two weeks of recyclable materials.
