Omaha, NE Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Under Omaha Municipal Code § 33-42(c), a privately-collected solid waste container with a capacity of five cubic yards or more, the size range that covers roll-off and construction dumpsters, cannot stay on a property for more than 30 days in any one-year period. The clock doesn't run against a dumpster kept permanently for regular weekly collection, and the 30-day cap is waived entirely while a building permit for the site is active, so a active construction project can keep its roll-off in place for the life of the job. Beyond that, the only way to keep a dumpster longer is a written hardship request to the planning director, who can grant an extension in writing. Separately, a dumpster placed in the street, alley, or on a public sidewalk needs its own public-works obstruction permit under § 43-151, with a $30.00 fee for the first 15 days under § 43-154(a) and another $30.00 per additional 15-day period.
