Walton County, GA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Walton County's Land Development Ordinance sets two firm requirements for any commercial dumpster serving a development in the unincorporated area. A requires the container to be located to the rear of the building and placed on a concrete pad built to a size and strength sufficient to support the weight of a garbage truck or other service vehicle making pickups. B requires the dumpster to be screened by an opaque enclosure standing not less than six feet in height, so the container is not visible from adjoining streets or properties.

This provision sits directly under the county's off-street loading and unloading standards in Article 7, Part 7-2, which also set minimum loading-space dimensions of fourteen feet in height, twelve feet in width and fifty-five feet in length, and require loading areas to be paved with asphalt, concrete, porous paving blocks, gravel or another material the Planning and Development Director approves. Because dumpster placement is regulated through the site-development process, the Director reviews pad location, enclosure design and vehicle access as part of the development permit for any commercial, retail, office, industrial or institutional project in the unincorporated county.

A developer who wants a dumpster located somewhere other than the rear of the building, or who wants a different screening material, must obtain the Director's approval rather than installing the enclosure wherever it is convenient on the site.
