Clay, NY Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Section 194-9 of the Town of Clay Code, part of Chapter 194 adopted September 18, 2000 by Local Law No. 1-2000, states plainly that haulers shall not collect solid waste in the town on Sundays, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Unlike a rolling holiday list, the town names only those two annual holidays plus every Sunday as no-collection days, so New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day are not exempted by this section and routes continue on schedule. Because the rule sits inside the same chapter that sets the 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. collection window under § 194-11 and requires haulers to hold an annual municipal license under § 194-5, a hauler skipping a Sunday, Thanksgiving or Christmas stop is following the ordinance, not violating its schedule; residents should expect their regular route to shift to an adjoining weekday.

Enforcement runs through the Town Code Enforcement Officer, Town Building Inspector, Town Fire Inspector, Highway Superintendent, Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, New York State Police and Department of Environmental Conservation officers under § 194-19C, with the Town Board empowered to seek a compliance injunction under § 194-19B. A hauler that collects on a Sunday, Thanksgiving or Christmas anyway is fined $50 for the offense under the § 194-20 penalty schedule, with each day treated as a separate violation under § 194-19A.
