Summary

Escambia County Code § 82-131(1) says residential pickups "shall not be reduced by holidays." ECUA's posted 2026 schedule moves Thursday Thanksgiving collection to Friday, November 27, and Friday collection to Saturday, November 28. Christmas Day Friday collection moves to Saturday, December 26, and New Year's Day 2027 Friday collection moves to Saturday, January 2, 2027.

These county ordinances apply to unincorporated areas of Escambia County. Incorporated cities within the county may have their own rules that take precedence over county-level regulations.

(1)Frequency. All residential wastes, except for rubbish, shall be collected and removed at least twice per week. Rubbish shall be collected and removed at least once per week. Pickups shall not be reduced by holidays, but pickups normally scheduled to be made on a holiday may be rescheduled upon approval by the board of county commissioners. At least five days prior notification to the affected residential premises by publication of the display of a one-time ad in a newspaper of daily circulation in the county shall be provided.

Full Breakdown

The county code sets the floor. Section 82-131(1) requires franchised collectors to pick up residential waste other than rubbish at least twice per week and rubbish at least once per week, and it adds that pickups shall not be reduced by holidays. A pickup normally scheduled on a holiday can be rescheduled, but only with approval by the board of county commissioners, and the affected premises must get at least five days of prior notice through a one-time display ad in a newspaper of daily circulation in the county. The code names no holidays and prints no dates, so the actual calendar comes from the collector.

The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) posts that calendar on its Residential Customers page under the heading "2026 Escambia County Residential and Commercial Holiday Collection Schedules." ECUA says it provides garbage, recycling, and yard trash pickup to residential customers within the area of Escambia County. For Thanksgiving, the page lists Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Friday, November 27, 2026, with two lines: Thursday collection will be made on Friday (11/27/26), and Friday collection will be made on Saturday (11/28/26). For Christmas, listed as Friday, December 25, 2026, Friday collection will be made on Saturday (12/26/26). For New Year's Day, listed as Friday, January 1, 2027, Friday collection will be made on Saturday (1/2/27).

The page prints a "No Change" line for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 19, 2026), Presidents' Day (Monday, February 16, 2026), Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2026), Independence Day (Saturday, July 4, 2026) and Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2026). Earlier in the year, New Year's Day 2026 on Thursday, January 1 moved Thursday collection to Friday (1/2/26) and Friday collection to Saturday (1/3/26).

The schedule prints no standing slide rule for the rest of a holiday week, and it says nothing about Veterans Day, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. Only the lines above are printed, so any route not named on them carries no posted change.

Violations & Fines

Neither the code section nor the ECUA page prints a penalty for a missed holiday pickup. ECUA's Residential Customers page offers online request links for a Garbage Missed Pickup, a Recycling Missed Pickup and a Yard Trash Missed Pickup. It also asks customers to place garbage, recycling, and yard waste at the curb the night before the scheduled collection day to avoid missed pickups. Customer Service is at 850-476-0480, open Monday through Friday, 8:30AM - 5:00PM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is trash picked up on Thanksgiving in Escambia County?
ECUA's 2026 schedule lists Thanksgiving as Thursday, November 26, 2026. Thursday collection will be made on Friday (11/27/26), and Friday collection will be made on Saturday (11/28/26). The page does not use the words "no collection"; it prints the moved days. The county code adds that pickups shall not be reduced by holidays.
What happens to pickup on Christmas Day 2026?
Christmas falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. ECUA prints one line for it: Friday Collection will be made on Saturday (12/26/26). No other weekday is listed as changed for Christmas, and Christmas Eve is not mentioned on the page, so the posted change covers Friday routes only.
When is the New Year's Day 2027 make-up day?
New Year's Day 2027 is Friday, January 1, 2027. ECUA's schedule states that Friday Collection will be made on Saturday (1/2/27). The same page also lists New Year's Day 2026 separately, where Thursday collection moved to Friday (1/2/26) and Friday collection moved to Saturday (1/3/26).
Who approves a holiday reschedule under the county code?
Section 82-131(1) says pickups normally scheduled on a holiday may be rescheduled upon approval by the board of county commissioners. It also requires at least five days of prior notification to the affected residential premises by a one-time display ad in a newspaper of daily circulation in the county.
Do Memorial Day and Labor Day change my collection day?
No. ECUA's 2026 list shows No Change for Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2026) and Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2026). It prints the same No Change line for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents' Day and Independence Day, which falls on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
