Southampton, NY Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 205-5 sets the rules Town residents and visitors must follow when putting waste out for a licensed hauler/carter to collect. Every owner or occupier of a residence must provide suitable and sufficient containers for solid waste and recyclables at all times (§ 205-5(B)(1)). Containers of 32 gallons or less holding solid waste or recyclables must be watertight, with covers and handles of adequate strength (§ 205-5(B)(2)). Corrugated cardboard must be placed in a container or bundled in stacks no larger than 18 inches by 18 inches, or as the hauler/carter otherwise approves, to keep it from littering the street (§ 205-5(B)(3)).

Co-mingled recyclables, meaning No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass bottles, tin and metal cans, must go in containers bearing a label supplied by the refuse hauler/carter (§ 205-5(B)(4)). The hauler/carter side of pickup is regulated too: collection vehicles must be sanitary, leak-proof and either fully enclosed or covered to stop stormwater contamination, rear-load packers must stay closed in transit, and no debris may fall onto a street during collection (§ 205-5(D)). All permitted haulers/carters are subject to Town inspection of their collection vehicles at any time to enforce these standards (§ 205-5(D)(9)).
