Sunnyvale provides weekly curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and organics through Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling with strict set-out time requirements.
The City of Sunnyvale contracts with Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling (SSWR) for curbside collection of solid waste, recyclables, and organic materials (including food scraps and yard waste). Under Sunnyvale Municipal Code Chapter 8.16, all residential and commercial properties are required to subscribe to collection service. Carts must be placed at the curb no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before collection and removed from the curb by 10:00 p.m. the day of collection. Carts should be placed with wheels against the curb, handles facing the house, and at least three feet of clearance between carts and from parked vehicles, mailboxes, or obstructions. Missed pickups should be reported within 24 hours. State law SB 1383 requires organic waste collection from all residents and businesses to reduce methane emissions.
