Fitchburg, WI Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

City Code § 41-82 requires occupants of single-family and two-unit to four-unit residences, multiple-family dwellings, and nonresidential facilities and properties to separate 19 listed categories of material from postconsumer waste: lead-acid batteries, major appliances, electronic devices, waste oil and oil filters, yard waste, brush, waste tires, noncontaminated recyclable plastic bags, aluminum containers, bi-metal containers, corrugated paper or other containerboard, foam polystyrene packaging, glass containers, magazines, newspaper, office paper, mixed paper, plastic containers, and steel containers. The program is adopted under state authority in § 41-51, citing Wis.

09 and the city's municipal authority under Wis. ch. 66, and § 41-50 states its purpose as promoting recycling, composting and resource recovery consistent with Wis. 11 and Wis. Admin. Code ch. NR 544. Section 41-83, as renumbered by Ord. No. 2025-O-26 in November 2025, carves out limited exemptions: occupants who send waste to a DNR-licensed processing facility that recovers the § 41-82 materials in as pure a form as technically feasible, solid waste burned as supplemental fuel where less than 30 percent of heat input comes from that waste, and materials for which the DNR has granted a variance under Wis.

11(2m) or Wis. Admin. 14. Section 41-84 further requires separated recyclables to be kept substantially clean and free of contaminants like food residue, oil, grease and household hazardous waste, and stored to protect them from wind, rain and other weather until set out for collection.
