Satellite Beach, FL Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Satellite Beach City Code § 50-36 governs what happens to recycling once a resident sets it out. Before it goes in the cart, recyclable material has to be drained of liquids, and glass food containers rinsed; metal cans don't need flattening and labels don't need to come off cans or glass, but newspapers must be free of food or other contaminants. The recycling cart itself is furnished to residents by the city's contractor and stays contractor property under § 50-36(b): no resident may remove a cart from the premises.

Under § 50-36(c), recyclables have to be sorted from other solid waste by the resident and set at curbside separate from garbage and yard trash carts on the collection day the city assigns for recycling, which § 50-37(a) sets as every Monday. Using the recycling cart for anything other than recycling is prohibited abuse of the container under § 50-36(d). Once material is placed in the cart, § 50-36(e) makes it the contractor's property, and it becomes a chapter violation for anyone other than someone authorized by the city to collect or pick up recyclable material set out for collection, closing off scavenging by unauthorized haulers.

Chapter 50's mandatory-service structure, set out in § 50-31, requires every residential owner and tenant, along with commercial property owners and operators, to subscribe to and pay for solid waste collection service, and recyclable materials collection runs alongside that mandatory garbage service under the same contract.
