Boise, ID Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Section 10-4-2-4 lays out specific handling rules on top of the basic accepted-materials list. Used motor oil cannot go in the recycling cart at all: it must sit in a leakproof, transparent or translucent, screw-lid plastic container placed near, but not inside, the compost, recycling or trash carts, capped at one gallon per container and two gallons total per week, and the franchise hauler will not return the container to the customer. 3; it has to move through the separate subscription glass collection program, a designated glass drop-off site, or the regular trash cart instead, and the glass program itself only covers bottles and jars under two gallons.

Subsection E treats any recycling or glass container holding trash or disallowed materials as contaminated: the franchise hauler can empty it as ordinary trash, bill the customer for extra trash collection, and the city or hauler may terminate recycling service to a repeat violator entirely. Occasional overflow recyclables that will not fit in the cart must go into a rigid container such as a cardboard box or a labeled 20 to 32 gallon customer-owned can under subsection F, never loose or in plastic bags, since the code separately bans plastic bags as a way of containing recyclable materials.
