Yard waste in Edison - leaves, grass clippings, brush, and tree limbs - is NOT collected with regular garbage. The Department of Public Works runs separate seasonal leaf collection (typically loose curbside pickup in fall) and brush/limb pickup by appointment. Mixing yard waste into regular trash is a Chapter 21 violation, and storm drains may not be used to dispose of leaves under N.J.A.C. 7:14A stormwater rules.
Edison's yard-waste handling is governed by Chapter 21 Solid Waste Management plus the NJDEP stormwater regulations adopted at Chapter 19A and the local stormwater pollution prevention plan. The DPW collects leaves only during the published fall leaf-collection season (typically mid-October through mid-December); residents rake leaves into the gutter line in front of their property (not into the street) and the DPW vacuum truck makes section-by-section passes. Leaves bagged in plastic are not collected during the loose-leaf season; biodegradable kraft-paper yard-waste bags can be put out year-round on regular garbage day for brush/clippings of moderate size. Larger brush and tree limbs (cut into manageable lengths) require an appointment through the DPW bulk line at (732) 248-7288. Grass clippings are not separately collected - residents are encouraged to mulch in place ('grasscycle') or compost on-site. It is a violation of both Chapter 21 and the township stormwater ordinance (Edison Code Β§15-something / NJ Stormwater Rule N.J.A.C. 7:14A) to sweep, blow, or dump leaves or grass clippings into the street, gutter, or storm drain - those materials clog drains, foul the Raritan River watershed, and trigger nutrient pollution. Composting at home is permitted under N.J.A.C. 7:26A-1.4 as long as the pile is maintained to avoid odor and vermin nuisance.
Chapter 21 / Chapter 19A stormwater violation: $250 - $2,000 per offense, each day a separate violation. NJDEP can additionally enforce stormwater-pollution violations under N.J.A.C. 7:14A-25 with civil penalties up to $25,000 per day for commercial violators.
