Bulk items (furniture, mattresses, rugs, brush, white goods) in Edison are collected only by appointment. Residents must call the DPW at (732) 248-7288 in advance and obtain a confirmation number; items placed curbside without a confirmation will not be collected and disposal becomes the homeowner's responsibility.
Edison Township's regular garbage collection excludes bulk and 'special pickup' items. The DPW operates a separate appointment-based bulk program for furniture, mattresses, large rugs, brush and tree limbs, white goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves), and similar oversized items. The process is: (1) call the DPW at (732) 248-7288, (2) describe each item, (3) receive a confirmation number and scheduled pickup date, and (4) place the items at the curb on the scheduled morning, never before. The DPW rule is explicit and frequently enforced: 'any materials placed curbside prior to receiving a confirmation number WILL NOT be collected by the Township and their disposal will be the responsibility of the homeowner.' Building and demolition materials (drywall, lumber, shingles, garage doors), industrial waste, earth, stone, hazardous materials, and tires are not eligible for the bulk program at all - they must go to a licensed C&D facility or a Middlesex County household hazardous-waste event. White goods containing refrigerants (refrigerators, freezers, AC units) must have a CFC-recovery tag attached, performed by a licensed HVAC contractor under N.J.A.C. 7:27-31, before pickup. Residents can also drop off many items at the Edison Recycling Center at 745 New Durham Road (Mon-Sat, 6:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) with proof of residency.
Bulk items left curbside without a confirmation number become a Chapter 15 property-maintenance accumulation issue: $25 - $250 first offense, $200+ subsequent. White goods placed out without a CFC-recovery tag can additionally trigger NJDEP enforcement under N.J.A.C. 7:27-31.
