Broomfield, CO Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

Section 17-70-070(A)(1) of the Broomfield Landscape Code governs curbside and parkway tree planting for both public and private streets. Street trees must be centered within the curbside landscape area, the strip between the back of curb and face of a detached walk, to create a continuous street edge; trees may be grouped for aesthetic effect, but no gap between groupings of street trees may exceed 120 feet, and no tree may be placed within an easement unless the easement holder permits it. Species selection is fixed by subsection (iv): street trees must be deciduous, thornless, fruitless canopy trees of species that mature to a height of between thirty and sixty feet with a canopy that matures to at least twenty-five feet wide; evergreen trees are barred from use as street trees under subsection (i), though existing healthy deciduous trees may be counted toward the requirement.

Trees must also be set back at least fifty feet from the face of any stop sign to preserve the sight-distance area, per subsection (v), and must comply with Section 700 of the Broomfield Standards and Specifications for sight-distance design. Minimum planting rates follow in Section 17-70-070(A)(2): one street tree per forty linear feet of frontage along detached walks, or one tree per twenty linear feet along attached walks. If an easement conflicts with tree placement, the applicant must substitute shrub equivalents or relocate the trees elsewhere on site, and relocated trees cannot double as required landscaping elsewhere.
