Broomfield, CO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 17-32-140 opens with the general rule in subsection (A): no fence in any district may exceed six feet in height, subject to five exceptions. Fences enclosing outdoor swimming pools may go higher to meet the pool-barrier rule in subsection (F). Fences adjacent to state highways may reach eight feet. Fences in the B-1, B-2, I-1, I-2, and I-3 districts may also reach eight feet, except that fences required to screen outdoor storage of equipment, machinery, and vehicles in the I-1, I-2, and I-3 districts must run between six and ten feet, with the exact height set through the permit review process to maximize screening from adjacent properties and public streets.

Sound walls along arterial roadways may reach ten feet with city manager approval. Subsection (B) adds a safety rule that applies everywhere: no fence, hedge, wall, shrubbery, or sign may interfere with the vision of motorists at any intersection, the corner visibility triangle rule. Subsection (C) then tightens things for front yards in the E-1, E-2, R-1, R-3, and R-5 districts, where only ornamental fences no taller than two and a half feet are permitted. Subsection (D) layers on a setback formula for business and industrial front yards: fences and walls there must be set back from the front lot line two feet for every foot of fence height. Fences within street rights-of-way must also separately comply with chapter 12-08.
