Broomfield, CO Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 15-03-070(A), B.M.C. requires an owner or agent who intends to construct, alter, or install a structure regulated by the Building Code to first apply to the building official and obtain a permit before doing the work. Fences fall within that general rule, but section 15-03-070(B) lists specific work exempt from the permit requirement, and item 8 under the 'Building' category exempts 'fences thirty inches high or less.' Any fence built above that thirty-inch threshold needs a building permit, reviewed by Broomfield's Division of Building Safety and Inspection Services (15-03-050).

The code is explicit that an exemption from the permit process does not authorize work that otherwise violates city ordinances (15-03-070(B) intro). A permit application must include a description of the work and site, construction documents, and an estimated valuation (15-03-080, 15-03-090).
