Lyon County, NV Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

Lyon County Code section 15.402.03(E), part of Chapter 402 Landscape Standards, governs street tree planting within the public right-of-way corridor in unincorporated Lyon County, Nevada. Street trees must be organized in a formal architectural fashion that reinforces, defines, and connects the spaces and corridors created by buildings and other streetscape features, rather than planted at random. Subsection 1 fixes the location: street trees go in the area between the curb and sidewalk, or another location most appropriate for street tree planting where no separate parkway strip exists.

Subsection 2 sets a numeric spacing standard, capping the gap between trees at two times the tree's mature crown diameter, a formula that scales the spacing to the species selected rather than setting a flat foot measurement. Subsection 3 requires the planting to consist of a mixture of canopy shade trees rather than a single species or ornamental, non-shading variety. Subsection 4 addresses the rest of the parkway strip: shrubs, annuals, perennials, ground cover, and turf may be added between the curb and sidewalk, but that additional landscaping must be planted and maintained by the adjacent property owner, subject to approval of the applicable jurisdiction, which can be a homeowners' association, landscape maintenance association, improvement district, or general improvement district.

Because this section sits inside the Title 15 development code, it applies when Community Development reviews a project's landscape plan under section 15.402.03(G), and violations of the chapter carry the misdemeanor penalty set out in section 15.15.03.
