Compton adopted ADU Ordinance No. 2341 on December 28, 2021. Both attached and detached ADUs up to 1,200 sq ft and JADUs up to 500 sq ft are permitted in residential zones with no minimum lot size.
Under Compton ADU Ordinance No. 2341, adopted December 28, 2021, accessory dwelling units are defined per California Government Code Section 65852.2. Detached ADUs may be up to 1,200 square feet. Attached ADUs may be up to 50% of the existing living area or 1,200 square feet, whichever is less. JADUs are limited to 500 square feet within the existing residence. Single-family lots allow one ADU; owner-occupied properties may add one JADU for a total of two units. Multi-family properties may convert up to 25% of existing units. There are no minimum lot size restrictions. Setbacks: 4-foot side and rear for detached ADUs, 10-foot separation from existing structures. Height limit: generally 16 feet for detached ADUs. One parking space per ADU unless exempt (within 1/2 mile of transit, part of existing structure, or garage conversion). The city offers four free conceptual ADU plan sets in partnership with SCAG.
Unpermitted ADU construction is a building code violation. State law requires permit decisions within 60 days of a complete application.
