Kenner, LA Accessory Structures: Shed & Carport Rules (2026)

The Unified Development Code sets detailed placement and size limits for accessory buildings under its use-regulations article. An accessory building not part of the main house may go in a required side yard, except along the street side of corner lots, if it sits at least sixty feet from the front lot line and at least three feet from the side lot line; on through lots the same three-foot side setback applies with no portion allowed in either front yard. On corner lots, accessory buildings are barred entirely from the side yard on the street side and from the portion of the rear yard between the side street and the extension of that side yard line.

In a required rear yard, an accessory building or shed cannot occupy more than forty percent of that yard, and where it is not built directly on a lot line it must still keep a three-foot setback from the side or rear line. Height is capped at thirteen feet for any accessory structure in a required rear or side yard, and the combined footprint of all accessory buildings in the side and rear yards is likewise held to forty percent of the required rear yard, with no more than one accessory building allowed to occupy any part of a required side yard.

A separate, tighter rule targets prefabricated utility sheds: factory-panel storage buildings are allowed only in rear yards and are capped at a maximum area of two hundred square feet. These standards are administered through the building permit process handled by the Department of Inspections and Code Enforcement.
