Littleton, CO Animal Ordinances: Cat Rules (2026)

City Code Chapter 6-2, Dogs and Cats, sets Littleton's rules for cat ownership. Section 6-2-2(A) makes it unlawful for a cat owner to fail to have the cat vaccinated against rabies by a veterinarian licensed in Colorado, or a supervised veterinary technician, and to keep the vaccination current through revaccination before it expires. Section 6-2-2(B) carves out an exception for an infirm cat whose owner holds a veterinarian's letter stating vaccination would likely be fatal. Section 6-2-2(C) backs the requirement with a production duty: an owner who cannot show a police officer or animal control officer either a current rabies certificate or the infirmity letter is separately in violation.

Unlike dogs, cats are not swept into the collar-and-tag mandate of Section 6-2-2(D), which by its own text applies only to any dog, and the running-at-large offense in Section 6-2-3 likewise names only dogs. Cats still count toward the household pet cap in Section 6-2-10, which bars keeping more than five dogs, cats and rabbits combined over six months old on one residential-zone property, with no more than three of any single species. A cat that has bitten a person can be impounded and held for observation up to ten days under Section 6-2-11(F), and unclaimed cats may be destroyed, sold or otherwise disposed of six days after impoundment under Section 6-2-11(E).
