Littleton, CO Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Section 6-2-10 of City Code Chapter 6-2 caps how many dogs, cats and rabbits a single residential-zone property in Littleton may keep. Subsection (A) bars maintaining a combined total of more than five dogs, cats or rabbits over six months old on one property, and within that total no more than three may belong to any one of those three species, so a household could keep three dogs and two cats, but not four dogs and two cats. Animals six months or younger are not counted toward the cap.

The rule works alongside Section 6-2-9, which separately bars operating a dog or cat kennel in any zone that restricts that use and treats doing so as a public nuisance, so a property that wants to keep more animals than Section 6-2-10 allows cannot simply reclassify itself as a kennel in a residential zone. Enforcement of the numbers limit is deliberately harder to trigger from a neighbor complaint than most Chapter 6-2 offenses: Section 6-2-10(B) lets city police or an animal control officer issue a summons on their own initiative only if they personally observed the violation; otherwise, a summons cannot issue unless it has first been signed and verified by two people at least eighteen years old who do not live in the same household, a built-in check against a single neighbor's complaint.
