Anchorage, AK Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Anchorage's zoning code regulates the outdoor keeping of chickens, poultry, and other small animals under AMC 21.05.070D.17. On lots of 6,000 square feet or less, up to five animals are allowed, plus one more per additional 1,000 square feet, and a facility license may be required under Title 17. On lots of 40,000 square feet or more, the cap is one animal per 1,000 square feet. Enclosures must sit at least 10 feet from any lot line and out of zoning setbacks. Roosters, turkeys, guinea fowl, peacocks, and geese are barred outright on lots under 40,000 square feet as "excessively noisy animals," and chronic animal noise is separately prohibited under AMC 17.05.010. Larger operations of four or more large domestic animals (horses, cows, etc.) fall under the separate large domestic animal facility rules in AMC 21.05.070D.14, which require a 40,000-square-foot minimum lot.
