Gretna, LA Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 8-1 makes it unlawful to allow 'any animal or fowl' under a person's care to run at large in the city, with any loose animal or fowl subject to impoundment under rules the mayor and city council set; that running-at-large ban does not apply to dogs or cats. Section 8-2 flatly bans keeping, maintaining or harboring any swine anywhere in the city, with no distance exception. Section 8-3 goes further for larger animals: it is unlawful to keep, maintain or harbor a goat, cow, horse or other livestock within 300 feet of any residence, church or school, unless every resident living within that 300-foot radius signs a petition waiving enforcement.

The Code does not define 'livestock' or separately address keeping chickens or other fowl for eggs or meat, so a backyard flock is governed by the general § 8-1 running-at-large duty rather than the § 8-3 distance rule written for goats, cows and horses. All three sections trace to the 1979 and 1997 codes and remain in force in Chapter 8, Article I.
