Wyandotte County, KS Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Wyandotte County's Unified Government permits keeping backyard hens and ducks without an agricultural zone, but confines other fowl to farmland. Sec. 7-175 exempts ducks and female hens (chickens) from the citywide ban on keeping fowl outside agricultural zoning, capping any household at six birds regardless of lot size. Coops, hutches or other housing must sit at least 25 feet from any inhabited building other than the keeper's own home, and at least ten feet from the property line; birds must be enclosed at all times except homing pigeons.

Sec. 7-177(c) requires one nest or laying box of at least one square foot for every three chickens. Larger livestock, meaning horses, mules, cattle, sheep, and goats, fall under Sec. 7-172: outside agricultural zoning no more than two such animals may be kept, and none may be kept, pastured or fed within 50 feet of any inhabited building besides the owner's residence, though the two-animal cap does not bind licensed riding stables or parcels of five acres or more. Anyone keeping livestock or fowl in a non-agricultural zone must also obtain a permit from the director of animal control under Sec.

7-170, renewable every two years, with no permit issued if the property carries open code violations. Swine are separately banned under Sec. 7-171 except for licensed potbellied pigs under 100 pounds. Manure must be removed or stored to prevent flies and disease under Sec. 7-174, and Sec. 7-173 makes offensive odors from any animal or fowl enclosure a nuisance.
