Wyandotte County, KS Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Sec. 7-212 makes it unlawful for anyone in charge of a residence to keep, or allow to be kept, more than three dogs or three cats over 120 days of age, or any combination of dogs and cats exceeding six animals total. A. 47-1701, and meets the Unified Government's local criteria, or if the resident is not selling dogs commercially and has obtained a current permit to exceed the pet limit from the Unified Government board of commissioners. A third carve-out benefits foster homes: animals owned by a Kansas-licensed animal shelter, pound, or rescue and fostered under that organization's supervision are excluded from the count entirely, so long as the fostering residence is registered with the state department of agriculture and never houses more than five foster dogs over six months old at once.

Every dog and cat kept past six months of age must also be individually registered with the director of animal control under Sec. 7-261, tagged, and vaccinated against rabies under Sec. 7-213, obligations that apply on top of, not instead of, the Sec. 7-212 numeric cap. Animal control officers enforce the limit through complaint-driven inspections and the entry powers in Sec. 7-8.
