Homestead, FL Animal Ordinances: Dog Leash Laws (2026)

Homestead follows Miami-Dade County's leash law under County Code Chapter 5, which requires all dogs to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet when on public property, sidewalks, parks, and other public areas. The leash must be held by a person physically capable of controlling the dog. Dogs may be off-leash only in designated dog parks or enclosed private property. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs on public property and in common areas: failure to do so is a separate citable offense. Dogs must be under control at all times, even on a leash. Aggressive behavior by a leashed dog can result in additional enforcement under the county's dangerous dog provisions. Homestead's parks and recreational areas are popular dog-walking locations, and the city encourages responsible pet ownership. Dogs must have current Miami-Dade County license tags and rabies vaccination tags displayed on their collar when in public.
