California has one of the nation's strictest exotic pet laws. CA Code of Regulations Title 14 Β§671 bans private ownership of ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, monkeys, large cats, most reptiles over certain sizes, and most wild species. Folsom enforces through Sacramento County Animal Care and CDFW.
California Code of Regulations Title 14 Β§671 (Restricted Species List) is among the most restrictive in the nation. Banned without a CDFW permit: ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, monkeys and primates, large cats (servals, caracals), venomous snakes, most constrictors over 8 feet, alligators, gerbils, and many bird species. Allowed without state permit: dogs, domestic cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, standard parrots, budgies, most freshwater fish, domesticated bearded dragons, corn snakes and ball pythons under size limits. Folsom Municipal Code incorporates state restrictions and Sacramento County Animal Care investigates reports. Illegal animals are confiscated and often euthanized if relocation is impossible. CDFW (California Department of Fish & Wildlife) investigates major violations.
Misdemeanor under CA Fish & Game Code Β§2118: up to $10,000 fine and/or 6 months jail. Animals seized.
