Irvine restricts exotic and wild animal ownership under IMC Title 4, Division 5 and California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 671. Most primates, large cats, bears, and venomous reptiles are prohibited as pets.
Under IMC Title 4, Division 5 and state law, keeping wild, exotic, dangerous, or non-domestic animals requires a permit and many species are prohibited outright. California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 671 prohibits private possession of most primates, large cats, bears, wolves, venomous reptiles, and alligators without special permits that are generally not issued to individuals. The city may restrict any animal that poses a nuisance, health hazard, or safety risk. Exotic animal permits where available require proof of adequate enclosure, liability insurance, and veterinary care. OC Animal Care and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife enforce these restrictions.
Keeping prohibited exotic animals is a misdemeanor under California law with fines, confiscation, and criminal charges. City code enforcement may issue additional citations.
