Louisburg, KS Animal Ordinances: Exotic Pets (2026)

Louisburg City Code § 2-401, Exotic animals, in Chapter 2's Article 4 (Other Animals), makes it unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep, maintain, or have in possession or control within the City any poisonous reptile, any other dangerous wild animal or reptile, or any vicious or dangerous animal or reptile of wild propensities. Subsection (b) then lists specific prohibited animals: all poisonous animals including rear-fang snakes, apes (chimpanzees, gibbons, gorillas, orangutans, siamangs), baboons, badgers, bears, bison, bobcats, cheetahs, crocodilians 30 inches or longer, constrictor snakes six feet or longer, coyotes, deer (including elk, antelope and moose), elephants, game cocks and other fighting birds, hippopotami, hyenas, jaguars, leopards, lions, lynxes, monkeys, ostriches, pumas/cougars/mountain lions, raccoons, rhinoceroses, skunks, tigers and wolves.

Subsection (c) exempts bona fide pet shops, zoos, circuses, carnivals, educational institutions and medical institutions, but only if their location conforms to the City's zoning ordinance, animals and quarters are kept clean and free of objectionable odors, and enclosures are built to prevent escape. Subsection (d) gives the municipal judge authority to order any animal deemed vicious confined, destroyed or removed from the City, independent of the general penalty that otherwise applies to Chapter 2 violations under § 1-116.
