Sauk County, WI Animal Ordinances: Mandatory Spay/Neuter (2026)

Chapter 27 requires every dog over five months of age kept in Sauk County to carry an annual license, issued under Sec. 27.005(1). The application, made to the collecting official, must include the owner's name and address, a description of the animal, the license fee, a current rabies certificate signed by a veterinarian and, when applicable, written proof the dog has been rendered sterile. Sec. 27.005(1)(k) sets the resulting fee split: $10.00 for a dog not rendered sterile and $5.00 for one a veterinarian confirms has been spayed or neutered.

Licenses run the calendar year, applications made more than 30 days after acquiring a dog over four months old trigger a $5.00 late fee under Sec. 27.005(1)(j), and a duplicate tag costs $2.00 under Sec. 27.005(1)(l). Companion dogs certified to assist a physically impaired person get a free annual license under Sec. 27.005(1)(e). Kennel operators face a separate schedule under Sec. 27.005(2): $100.00 for the first 12 dogs and $10.00 for each additional dog, and kennel dogs need rabies vaccination but not individual licenses. The Sauk County Sheriff's Department and Health Department, per Sec. 27.012, enforce the licensing chapter, and the collecting official keeps a public record of every tag number issued.
